Last night I was at a beer garden watching the debate/football game and an ad came on for Party City. This is a prime time ad at 8:30-ish on a Thursday night that had to have cost a fuck load of money. Me and every dude at my table was like, “ WTF? Are the people who don’t know Party City exists?”

What’s the value proposition for a seasonal store to advertise on a national level? Does someone actually collect data on how ads affect people’s behavior or has everyone just been doing it for so long that it hasn’t occurr ed to anyone to question the value of it?

And yet here you are, thinking and talking about Party City.

To be honest I thought Party City had gone out of business. Looks like they were able to restructure a half-billion in debt this summer by paying off bondholders with stock and bonds due in 2026. The one here is permanently closed, though their former location which was vacant has been (presumably temporarily) filled by a store called “Halloween City”.

In any event, I’m sure ads do bring more business, though I have no idea if it is enough to justify the spend.

Good point, but it doesn’t make me any more likely to go there. Is the ad for awareness or to generate sales?

Party City does do fairly steady year round business - school supplies/ classroom decorations, Christmas, New Year, St Patrick’s Day, July 4th, birthday, graduations, retirements, new babies, summer camps, etc. They went through a bankruptcy awhile back, and I'll bet had been drawing down on marketing while they circled the drain, so it's probably worthwhile to remind customers they still exist and get people to visit their stores who maybe hadn't even thought about them in years.

The real question is whether it’s a moral crime to encourage people to hold parties right now. A return to bankruptcy or aiding and abetting a pandemic. Tough call.

I misread it as Patty City, and was like “Wait- WTF is that?!”
